I have to confess I didn’t know who Mike Campbell is before Saturday night. But after the third Tom Petty song, I figured it out: Duh, he had been the guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer is the frontman and lead guitarist for Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, which started as a side project and is now a full-time gig for Campbell, along with guitarist Jason Sinay, drummer Matt Laug and bassist Lance Morrison. Campbell’s floppy hat and heavy twang made him seem like a good ol’ boy from the hills, but the band’s mix of original and Tom Petty songs was edgy, fresh, and appreciated by the crowd.
