It should come as no surprise to anyone that Cannons, the synthpop darlings who are dominating the alt/indie charts, sold out their show at The Hi-Fi Indy April 1. Currently on tour in support of their brand-new album, “Fever Dream,” (which is currently #3 on the iTunes Alt Albums chart), Cannons has been selling out venues across the country, and Indy does love indie music.
Cannons’ lead vocalist Michelle Joy, guitarist Ryan Claphamand keyboardist/bassist Paul Davis, along with touring drummer Ben Hilzinger (Eve 6), played a delightfully long 16-song set, along with “Evening Star” as their encore. In addition to six cutsfrom “Fever Dream,” Cannons played a variety of songs from their other albums and EPs, including their breakout hit, “Fire for You,” plus a cover of Harry Styles’ “Golden.” Bathed in red lights and wearing marvelous, sparkly outfits, the Los Angeles-based band swirled fog and incense, along with their sultry, psychedelic music, around and through the Hi-Fi Indy creating a “fever dream” ambience. I’m sensitive to incense and had to put on my face mask, but I must admit the overall affect was successful.
Although all four musicians are immensely talented, Michelle Joy was clearly the star of the night. Not only were her breathy, sexy vocals on point, her fabulous wardrobe and graceful movements complemented each other perfectly. I was also impressed with the way she seemed to be genuinely happy to be performing, and interacted with the audience in a friendly, personal way without breaking the dreamy mood.
Cannons will be on the road till the end of summer. For more information just click here:
