Deadmau5 brought his Cube v3 tour to Navy Pier Chicago this weekend. The show was sold out to 12,750 fans.
I had been dying to see Deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman) tour since I had heard of the Cube and finally got the chance Saturday night. This was my first time to a concert at Navy Pier, so I did not know what to expect. The building there is MASSIVE and was the absolute perfect location for this event. With the look and feel of a giant warehouse, it really gave a rave quality vibe to the entire show.
Many fans showed up with homemade Mau5heads and were adorned head to toe for the occasion. These fans are awesome. Everyone was kind and welcoming and quick to let me through the huge crowd with my backpack and gear. Probably part of the reason I love EDM so much.
Cube v3 is a metal structure covered in LED so that messages, art, and graphics can play across it. There were also screens to make the visuals larger than life and of course, plenty of lasers and lighting effects as well.
Deadmau5 operates his deck from inside the Cube, which rotates at points during the set to reveal the man himself. It is impossible to describe the entire thing in words as this show is an experience to be had and felt. He played his classic songs as well as new ones and frankly I found it hard at times to concentrate on the job at hand because the music and production of the show was just SO GOOD. I caught myself dancing with my camera several times.
I did not want this show to
end, but the good news was that after the concert ended Joel played as his alter ego Testpilot at Concord music hall for another two and a half hours. Though I did not photograph that show I enjoyed being able to continue the party!
I am so glad I was able to go see this legend play. He truly was remarkable.
