Train at Ruoff Music Center on July 10, 2024

Wednesday, July 10, fans were treated to a nostalgic evening at the Ruoff Music Center with performances by Yacht Rock Revue, REO Speedwagon, and Train. Yacht Rock Revue kicked off the night with their smooth 70s and 80s soft rock classics. Yacht Rock Revue was followed by REO Speedwagon who brought their iconic 80s rock hits, performing hits like "Keep On Loving You," "Take It on the Run," from their smash-hit album, Hi Infidelity.

Train closed the night, bringing the crowd into the 2000s decade with a fun and energetic vibe that got the crowd on their feet from start to finish.

Opening with "Calling All Angels," the band immediately set the tone for a high-energy set filled with fan favorites, enhanced by their suitcase and travel-by-train-themed stage design. Monahan's charisma and the band's tight musicianship created an electric atmosphere that resonated throughout the venue.

The setlist was a perfect blend of Train's greatest hits and newer material. Songs like "Drive By" with a little, “Hey Jude” mixed in and my wife’s favorite, "Hey, Soul Sister" had the audience singing along. Guitarist Taylor Locke and drummer Matt Musty delivered exceptional performances, adding depth and richness to the live renditions of Train's songs. One of the highlights for me was a new song, “Long Yellow Dress."

The biggest highlight from the night for me was lead vocalist Pat Monahan’s interaction with the audience. This personal touch added a sense of intimacy to the large-scale show, making the night feel special for everyone in attendance.

Mohahan captivated the front row by letting a number of lucky fans toss their phones up to him on stage where he would take a selfie and toss it back, then look for another, and then another. I couldn’t help but snap some pictures of the amazing surprise and thrill of those fans. It is a definite treat to have the privilege of capturing not only a band, but the effect that live music and a gifted entertainer can have on people. It was also quite fun to have peoples’ cell phones tossed overhead to my left and right.

As they closed with "Drops of Juipiter," it was clear that Train's blend of rock, pop, and heartfelt lyrics had left a lasting impression, capping off an unforgettable evening of music.
